STEP #1 — Brainstorm and create.
The key is to be clear about what you want and where you are going. Think long-term. Start out by choosing three keywords, your content, product or services center around.
What are your brand and influencers using? Research and study your mentors, and competition. These are all great indicators of maybe some names that you could come up with or play off of. Also, make sure that your name is something memorable, that people are going to remember you by and it’s easily searchable in search engines.
If it’s a crazy name or has some kind of crazy spelling it’s going to be hard for people to find you. I’ve learned that just from whenever I created my name. Also, pick a name that you can grow with or grow into. You have to decide what you want to be known as with your brand and make sure that it is something that you can grow with or grow into as your brand continues to grow in the products and services that you offer.
STEP #2 — Decide whether to use your name or your business name.
The biggest question I had and I get a lot from other entrepreneurs is should I use my name or my business name. The easiest way to answer this is to think about what you’re going to be offering.
http://www.YourName.com — Are you going to be offering programs, different types of brands under your name. If you’re an expert, an author, some type of coach or speaker, then this might be a great opportunity for you to brand yourself and your business as your name.
http://www.BusinessName.com — If you’re going to be selling something one day like a product or specific service then you might want to choose a name that’s more fitting for your business. It would be a http://www.BusinessName.com versus http://www.YourName.com.
Step #3 — Research.
You want to make sure and do research on Google search engine to see what comes up when you put your name in.
Also, you want to do research on your social media handles. Check which social media platforms that you’re going to be active on and think long-term. You might want to go ahead and grab those ahead of time. That way those don’t get taken when you decide that you do want to use them.
Social media handles are really important and you want to have a unique look and feel across all platforms. Make sure that you’re checking hashtags if there is a hashtag that you think you want to use or if somebody else is using that hashtag.
Check a domain search engine like godaddy.com. You can search for blogginbrandi.com, foodsuppliers.net, or whatever it is that you decide that you want to do, just check to see if that domain name is available, if somebody is already using it or not.
You don’t want to use a name that somebody is already using.
Do you need help coming up with a name? Don’t you worry. I got you covered. Resources that I’ve used are name generators. I’ve done contest sites as well as using fiver.com where you could get somebody to come up with a name for you for $5.
Here are some of the Name Generators I have used:
☆Shopify – https://www.shopify.com/tools/business-name-generator
☆Wordoid – http://wordoid.com/
☆ Hipster – http://www.hipsterbusiness.name/
Let’s review: Think long-term. Decide what key words and topic areas your business is centered around. If you’re an expert selling your knowledge then you’re going to want to use http://www.YourName.com If you’re going to be selling a product or service you may want to use your http://www.BusinessName.com. Last, research if the name is taken and what variations are already online.
