1. Stop Everything! Hit Pause and Reflect
When you’re feeling overwhelmed, the first step is to stop and take a moment to breathe. Hit the pause button on your life. ELIMINATE DISTRACTIONS —close your phone, shut down your computer, and take a second to reflect.
This is the perfect time to meditate, brainstorm, or do a “brain dump.” Write down all your thoughts, tasks, and worries. Getting everything out of your head and onto paper can provide immense relief and clarity.

2. Declutter and Get Organized
Physical, digital, and mental clutter can add to your sense of overwhelm. Take some time to declutter all of these places and get organized.
- Digital Declutter: Clear out your email inbox, organize your files, and delete apps you no longer use. A tidy digital space can significantly reduce stress.
- Physical Declutter: Tidy up your workspace and living areas. Donate or discard items you no longer need. A clean, organized environment can help you think more clearly and feel more in control.
- Mental Declutter: Taking regular pauses, eliminating distractions, and being mindful of the content you consume, you can declutter your mind and align your daily life with your core values and goals.
3. Make a List of All Your Projects, Tasks, and To-Dos
List everything you need to do, from big projects to small tasks. Once you have your list, ask yourself the following questions for each item:
- Does this need to be done today?
- Does this need to be done by me?
- Does this need to be done at all?
4. Delete, Automate, Outsource, Defer, Do!
Now that you have your list and have asked the critical questions, it’s time to take action using the following strategies:
- Delete: Remove tasks that don’t need to be done at all.
- Automate: Find ways to automate repetitive tasks.
- Outsource: Delegate tasks that don’t require your personal attention.
- Defer: Postpone tasks that don’t need to be done immediately.
- Do: Focus on completing the most important tasks that only you can do.
