Here is the transcript from the video:
How do you wake up at 5:00 AM even if you don’t feel like it? I’ll tell you—me, myself, and I, I wake up at 5:00 AM no matter what. My body naturally wakes up at 5:00 AM—sometimes 4:00 AM, lately even 3:00 AM. I can’t help it. It depends on where I’m at — in the country. If you know, I travel a lot. I’m an entrepreneur, a digital nomad.
I’m able to run my business from anywhere. But in order for me to be productive, stay motivated, and get through my day, I actually have to wake up at 5:00 AM—earlier than anyone else—so that I’m able to do that. But I can’t tell you how many times I talk to other people and they say, “Oh my gosh, 5:00 AM? I can’t believe you get up at 5:00 AM. How do you do that?” I’m about to tell you all my tips and tricks—everything that allows me to do just that.
Without further ado, how do you wake up at 5:00 AM? Okay, so like I said, I naturally wake up at 5:00 AM—sometimes 4:00 AM, sometimes 3:00 AM—because of my dogs that like to wake me up.
But I’ve always been that way. I’ve always woken up at 5:00 AM. My parents have always woken up at 5:00 AM. I’ve just always been an early riser. I’ve always had jobs that were early jobs. I never worked late-night shifts—that wasn’t really my skill set. That’s one thing that probably contributes to it.
But I do have a 5:00 AM routine, and I have a nighttime routine. So I have a morning routine, a nighttime routine, and I actually hate waking up at any time other than 5:00 AM. If I wake up after 5:00 AM, I actually feel like half my day’s gone, and I just can’t catch up. I feel behind, left behind—as if I haven’t accomplished anything. Or if I don’t go to sleep at a certain time, I feel groggy, and I don’t wake up at the right time.
Let’s talk about some ways you can wake up at 5:00 AM and how you can feel motivated to get up even if you don’t feel like it.
Tip 1: Set an alarm
The first tip I have for waking up at 5:00 AM is—obviously—to set an alarm.
Go into your phone and set an alarm, or use a regular alarm clock in your room or wherever you’re going to be. You might even try setting multiple alarms—that can help too.
Personally, I don’t need an alarm. I naturally wake up early. I honestly can’t even tell you the last time I set one. The only time I do is if I absolutely have to be somewhere or do something at a specific time. I prefer to wake up when my body wakes me up—because usually, I’m up before 5:00 AM anyway.
One trick is to put your alarm in another room or across the room, away from your bed. That way, when it goes off, you’re forced to get up and go turn it off. Just make sure it’s loud enough for you to hear it! You could even try placing a second one in another spot as a backup.
Tip 2: Getting a dog.
The second idea I have for tips and tricks to help you wake up at 5:00 AM—even if you don’t feel like it—is getting a dog.
My dogs wake me up at 5:00 AM. I have four dogs and one cat. If you didn’t know that—welcome to Birdie’s Doghouse! I love my dogs, and they’re on a routine just like me. They’re like their mom. They get up at 5:00 AM—sometimes even earlier, like 3 or 4 AM—and they let me know it’s time to get up, too.
And usually, once they wake me up, I can’t go back to sleep.
Plus, if you have a dog—or any kind of responsibility—you’re basically forced to get up. You can’t just say, “Oh, I’m not getting up to let them go to the bathroom,” because if you don’t… they’re going to go in the house.
Tip 3: Shower and get ready.
Another way to get up at 5:00 AM is to shower and get ready.
Even if you work from home, I would highly, highly suggest it. Even if you’re in an RV van like me or camping at times, I still always get up and try to take a shower. If I’m in the van and can’t take a shower right away, I’ll splash my face with water, brush my teeth, use wet wipes, or whatever it takes to get clean, fresh, and dressed.
Maybe even have your outfit ready the night before, and get dressed as soon as you can. So get dressed that morning, get things ready the night before. Sometimes I’ve even had people say they shower the night before so they get a good night’s sleep and are ready to go the next day.
If your routine is that you take showers at night instead of in the morning, maybe that works better for you.
I always like to feel ready in case of an emergency. I don’t like to lay around and be lazy because if somebody calls—if my mom needs something or if an emergency happens—I want to be able to hurry up and go, not be like, “Oh, I gotta brush my teeth, comb my hair, and take a shower.”
I’d rather just be ready at the beginning of the day so whatever’s thrown at me, I’m able to do it—or even run outside if I have to.
Tip 4: Going to bed early.
Another tip for getting up early at 5:00 AM and staying motivated—even if you don’t feel like it—is going to bed early.
It may sound kind of simple, but seriously—how do you expect to get up early if you don’t go to bed early?
You need to get enough sleep the night before in order to wake up on time the next morning. Personally, I go to bed really early. I probably start falling asleep around 7 or 8 PM, and by 9:00 PM—I’m out. You will not catch me staying up late.
If I stay up late, I get groggy, irritated, and grumpy. I’m probably not super fun to be around.
I’m just not a night owl—I’m a morning person. I do my best work before noon, early in the morning.
Tip 5: Caffeine
Another tip I have for getting up at 5:00 AM—even if you don’t feel like it—is caffeine. Whether it’s coffee, a soft drink, or even an energy patch, those things can help give you the energy to get through your day.
I always start my day with coffee. I cannot start my day without it. It’s probably the very first thing I do when I wake up—I let the dogs out, start brewing my cup of coffee, and then sit down to read articles, go through my Bible, or whatever I have planned that morning.
I’ll look through my to-do list, sip on my coffee, and just hang out for a bit. The caffeine helps me wake up and stay alert.
Also—if I haven’t mentioned this or you don’t know—we have an energy company, and we offer an energy patch you can put on that gives you a natural boost of energy. It’s all-natural and helps me stay awake. It’s not just a big rush at the beginning of the day—it’s more of a gradual increase that lasts throughout the day.
That said, if you’re going to drink coffee, use caffeine, or take any kind of energy supplements, make sure:
- They’re safe.
- You’re not using them too late in the day.
Otherwise, they can keep you from falling asleep early—which you need to do if you want to wake up early. You don’t want to be forced to stay up late just because of the energy boost.
Tip 6: Do not eat late
Okay, so another tip I have for getting up at 5:00 AM—even if you don’t feel like it—is to not eat late.
We call it Linner in our house, which is lunch and dinner combined. It’s a late afternoon meal. We try not to eat too late in my household—we want to make sure we eat before bed, but not too close to bedtime.
Because if I eat too late, I get acid reflux. I end up lying down on my food, and it just doesn’t settle in my stomach before I’m able to actually fall asleep.
But if I don’t eat at all before bed, then I’m hungry and I can’t sleep. I’ll either wake up groggy and starving in the morning, or I’ll go to bed and feel like I want to get up and eat something.
The good news is, I rarely ever wake up in the middle of the night to snack or eat—that’s one positive thing I will say I don’t do.
Tip 7: Stop drinking alcohol
Another tip that I have for waking up at 5:00 AM is not drinking—stop drinking alcohol.
I actually haven’t had alcohol in at least six months, probably longer by the time you’re watching this video. We have a rule in our household of either not drinking at all—which we follow for multiple reasons (that’ll have to be a whole other video).
I’ve also seen people who say things like, “Oh, I don’t drink during the week,” or “I don’t drink after a certain time,” or “I only drink on the weekends.”
You have to figure out what works for you.
But for us, not drinking—and me not having alcohol in my system—means I’m not forced to stay up late, I don’t wake up groggy, and it doesn’t mess with my mind, my perception, or everything going on in my head. I never have to worry about waking up with a hangover or feeling tired or having any kind of issues because of alcohol—because I don’t drink.
Tip 8: Eat Breakfast
Another tip that I have for waking up at 5:00 AM—even if you don’t feel like it—is to eat breakfast.
I’m not a huge breakfast person, or at least I wasn’t for a while. But recently, I’ve started getting into the whole breakfast thing. Eating eggs, toast, and heavier things like protein and carbs in the morning helps me not only burn off all of those calories during the day, but it also gives me energy.
So, I’ll probably consume my heavier meals either in the morning or at lunch. I won’t eat as heavy of a meal at dinner, per se, so that way I have the whole day to burn off those calories and also get that energy from the things that I’m eating. So if I’m going to eat something “bad,” I’d rather eat it earlier in the day.
Tip 9: Imagine “What If” You Can’t Get Up
Another tip I have for waking up at 5:00 AM—even if you don’t feel like it—is to imagine what it would be like if you couldn’t get up.
I want you to really think: What if I physically couldn’t get out of bed again?
When you’re lying there thinking, “Ugh, I don’t want to get up,” I want you to ask yourself—what if you can’t?
There are people out there who wish they could get up—and they can’t. And here you are, lying in bed, being lazy, complaining, “I hate my life. It’s so horrible. I have to get up at 5:00 AM.”
But someone else out there would give anything just to be able to move. To sit up. To stand. To walk. And they can’t.
Don’t take for granted the gift you’ve been given—two arms, two legs, and a working mind and body. Because some people don’t have that. And let me tell you, that gift you’ve been given? It can be taken away just as fast as it was given.
You know what I’m saying? Life can take it back.
Tip 10: Spiritually = God commands us NOT to be lazy!
And when we’re talking about people, that brings me to my last tip and trick for waking up at 5:00 AM: how do you actually feel motivated to get up that early?
Well—maybe ask yourself, “Who commanded me to do this?”
“What is my purpose here on Earth?”
And “How am I going to fulfill it if I’m just laying around all the time?”
Spiritually, I believe that God commands us to get up and not be lazy. Yes, there is a time to rest and recharge your batteries, but I also believe you should have—not necessarily a strict schedule—but a balanced one.
I don’t work a typical 9-to-5. I’m not that type of person—I don’t do well with that.
(And if you don’t know, I made a video all about quitting my 9-to-5 job.)
Once you become a digital nomad or entrepreneur, and you have to figure things out for yourself, you have to build your own systems and strategies to get things done. For me, I don’t follow a rigid schedule, but my schedule is structured enough. It might change from day to day, but I’ve created systems that help keep my life organized, productive, and focused.
I’ve talked about those systems in other videos—how I stay motivated, how I keep my day flowing. For me, it’s about maintaining a healthy balance between life, work, family, worship, and rest. What that balance looks like for you may be different than what it looks like for me—and that’s okay.
But by getting up at 5:00 AM, I feel like the whole world is still. I can hear from the Holy Spirit—or whatever you believe in—it’s quiet. No one else is moving. No one else is talking or making noise. And I can get things done in that stillness that I couldn’t do once the world is up and moving and “popping and shaking.”
So it’s not just about how to wake up at 5:00 AM—It’s about why you should.
Whether it’s waking up early or staying up late, some people say, “Well, I’m a night owl. I’d rather stay up late than wake up early.” Maybe that works for you. But for me? That doesn’t work. I have to wake up early. It’s just a natural rhythm in my body—I honestly don’t even have control over it.
