Everyday Essentials I Keep in the Car & Why (Comfort + Safety)

Car Essentials To Never Leave Home Without

ICYMI, we’ve got a bit of a fleet — two RVs, a dog minivan, a smart car, and six animals who are basically our kids. 🐾

Since we’re always on the move, our vehicles double as mini-homes and mobile offices. Between road trips, errands, and RV travel days, we’ve learned what’s truly worth keeping in the car for comfort, safety, and peace of mind.

Whether you drive a car, van, or RV, here’s our list of go-to must-haves, nice-to-haves, and smart upgrades that make life on the road smoother for the whole family — furbabies included! Plus, some of them protect our investments and add value to the cars, RVs, etc..

🧺 Comfort & Protection Essentials

These are the things that make everyday drives and long trips way more enjoyable (and keep your car cleaner too):

  • Seat Covers – Amazon, Walmart, blankets! anything to protect your seats, TBH these are all depending on your type of vehicle’s seats — Vera Bradley blanks, Big blanket co… are some favorites.
  • Blankets – Protect your seats and stay cozy (especially in an emergency). We’ve used everything from Vera Bradley throws to towels and miscellaneous blankets, depending on the vehicle. We like to have Blankets For The Dogs (but also in case of emergencies)
  • Car Door Covers – Great for preventing scratches or paw marks if you travel with pets. Door Covers (not only do they help with scratches, but also unlocking doors and rolling down windows from the paws claws 🐾 ), we have these in all of our vehicles + the RV!
  • WeatherTech Floor Mats & Liners – Easy to clean and perfect for catching dirt, sand, and spills.
  • Air Fresheners – We like vacation-scented or our custom cut out air-freshener of “Birdie” for fresh vibes on the go.
  • Hand Sanitizer – to use after pumping gas, getting food, etc…

💡 Pro Tip: Keep a mini “comfort kit” with wet wipes, paper towels, tissues, snacks, and travel-sized toiletries — you’ll thank me later!

⚙️ Mechanical Must-Haves

Because nothing ruins a road trip faster than being stranded with a dead battery or low tire:

  • Battery Jumper Pack – A lifesaver when your car won’t start.
  • Portable Air Compressor – Quick tire top-offs anywhere.
  • Fixed OBD Monitor – If you’ve ever had a check engine light on your vehicle, this little device plugs into your OBD monitor. And through an app on your phone, it keeps tabs on your vehicle’s health, recalls etc… as well as it will tell you WHY your check engine light is on, how serious the issues are, the code, and you can clear the code! I think they also have an option to find a mechanic to repair any issues with your engine, too!
  • Second Battery Backup – everyone needs one of these (in case of a dead battery) — it is a little device you install on the vehicle battery itself. If you’re car is dead, NO NEED for jumper cables, all you gotta do is pull up the app on your phone, push the button, and whala, your car will turn on!

🚨 Safety & Emergency Essentials

From roadside breakdowns to messy moments, these items always stay in our vehicles:

  • AAA Membership – We keep coverage for our cars, vans, and RVs.
  • Dashcam – For safety and recording your travels.
  • Multi-Chargers & Power Banks – Because something’s always dying.
  • First Aid Kit – Add paper towels, wet wipes, and hand sanitizer.
  • Emergency Blankets – Great for both people and pets in cold weather.

🧰 Maintenance & Miscellaneous

Keeping your vehicles in good shape doesn’t just save money — it saves stress:

  • Lucas Oil Fuel Additive – Helps maintain engine performance.
  • Premium Gas (NV’s Rule) – He insists it’s worth it for every vehicle.
  • Basic Tools – Scissors, screwdriver, socket wrench, and more.
  • Car / RV Insurance — paperwork
  • Maintenance Tracker – Stay up to date on oil changes, tire rotations, and balance checks.

🐶 Bonus: Traveling With Pets

Even though this post isn’t just for pet parents, we can’t skip a few essentials for our furry crew:

  • Leashes, Harnesses & Collapsible Bowls
  • Blankets or Crate Liners for Comfort
  • Lint Roller & Waste Bags
  • Seat Belts or Carriers for Safety

Whether you have kids, pets, or just like being prepared — these items make every ride smoother.

You can find all the Dog’s Favorites list over at the Birdies Doghouse SHOP (on their dog blog).

Final Thoughts…

No matter what you drive — car, van, or RV — keeping a well-stocked vehicle helps you stay comfortable, safe, and ready for whatever the road throws your way.

These are the things we use and love daily, and they’ve definitely saved us more than once!
