Healthy Habits That Changed My Life (+ Ones I Quit)
There are a few healthy habits that changed my life forever! You don’t even know. I’m so proud of myself right now. I’ve got so much done and it is only 10:00 AM! For example: I have about 30 videos recorded, and ready to go out. Which is almost a year’s worth of content. And this isn’t just random which is why I feel that we need to have a conversation because there are some things I haven’t told you about yet. I’ve kind of hidden them a little bit. It’s been about six months (more like 10 years) But I’m gonna drop you a little nugget of knowledge here aka A BIG SECRET I’VE BEEN HIDING 🫣
As a nomadic entrepreneur and Digital Nomad, my life is always changing, but there are certain things in my routine both in the morning and at night that don’t really ever change. Let’s talk about some healthy habits that have changed my life and some things that I quit and you might wanna follow in my footsteps.
Wake up at 5am (or earlier)
So the first thing is waking up early! I wake up at 5:00 AM. Lately, it’s actually been earlier, I’m talking 3-4 AM when the dogs and the cat have been getting me up. If you don’t know about Birdies Doghouse and all the fur babies I’ve got up in my life, they’re always around!
Right now, Roland is sitting behind me, Birdie’s down below my feet. In total, I’ve got five fur babies right now (4 dogs and 1 cat). But since I rescue animals and foster them at times, back at Christmas we had 6 of them! So running an animal house and having a bunch of pets around causes me to wake up early!
Plus, I have a boyfriend who now wakes up early, which he used to sleep in super late! But, I’m gonna tell you why that changed in just a second! If he gets up early and wants to chat or get breakfast, etc… it causes me to not get stuff done and I get distracted. Since he’s been getting up early, I’ve had to eliminate some of those things and change my routine a little bit. But it’s caused me to wake up earlier and earlier to try to beat my team awake! lol
Either way, waking up early has changed the game for me because nobody else is up at that time. It gets so much done by the time noon rolls around. I mean right now, like I said, it’s only 10:00 AM in the morning and I’ve already gotten four videos recorded and 30 getting prepared to go out!
Also, I’ve checked my emails, check and responded to all my social media. I’ve done all the things that I need to do and technically I could just take off this afternoon and go handle my personal life, not my business life. Meaning I could leave “work” early because everything that MUST BE DONE is already done! That’s the perk of waking up at 5:00 AM you get everything else done because everyone else is sleeping. You need to be on when everyone else is off. How do you do that?…
Going to bed earlier!
The second healthy habit that has changed my life is going to Going to bed earlier: 7, 8, 9pm! I’m GONE, Out like a light bulb sleeping! Obviously, if you wanna wake up earlier, you have to go to bed earlier. I cannot stay up late like I used to! I’m in my thirties if you didn’t know that! So I wake up at 5am but I go to bed early, by about 9:00 PM! After that, it is way too late for me. It is past my bedtime!
By seven, eight o’clock, I’ve already eaten dinner, fed the animals and I am about to be sleeping if I’m not already. I don’t really do a whole lot at night, because I cannot stay awake anymore! I get really grumpy when I don’t have my sleep or if someone messes up my morning routine.
Since I wake up at 5:00 AM, if I don’t get to bed early at night then I’m grumpy and groggy the next day. In fact, if I don’t get up at 5:00 AM I feel like my whole day’s gone! If I sleep late and wake up at six or seven am I’m like, oh great, there goes the day! There is so much that I lost time doing because I like to read The Bible and do things that I like to do in the morning (aka my morning routine) and get other projects done that I can’t really do when things are coming at me during the day while everyone else is awake!
So if you work from home or while you roam and you’re a digital nomad like me, maybe you run your own business or are just working for someone else and you have all these distractions coming at you… If you try to you get up early and go to bed early, this will help you.
Next, I’m gonna tell you how I’m able to go to bed early…
Stopped drinking!
Now, the next thing that has changed my life in a MAJOR way is NOT drinking. I’m not a huge drinker anyway, but I stopped drinking alcohol almost a year ago. I was not really doing it for me. But, it was also partly because I’m a Godly person. thinking maybe I shouldn’t drink because you know, Jesus didn’t drink and God doesn’t want us to drink according to the Bible it causes bad things to happen! And he says don’t look at the glass and the wine that it sparkles, etc…
Again, I never really drank a lot anyway, especially now that I’ve become an entrepreneur, gotten a little bit older, and gone through “my story” — If you haven’t seen my story, I talked about some things that have changed in my life. Things I learned about my body and I just stopped drinking. However, it has also been to support some other people in my life who don’t drink and we’re making a change in their lives too! And so I really wanted to be there to support them.
It has helped to not drink and to have the alcohol removed from my life because before when I had to deal with drinking, it wasn’t me that had a problem, it was people around me who drank causing me to always be on eggshells, kept up late or being forced to get up earlier than I wanted to get up or even later than I wanted to get up. I would have to move my plans around or I would just be groggy — it just was a horrible experience to have alcohol in my life!
I’m just telling you personally, that I would remove drinking from your life, and also if you can remove anyone from your life who drinks that will change your life! Say no to events that involve drinking. Because now I don’t really find pleasure in hanging out with people who drink or going to places where people are drinking because it is not fun for me. It’s not fun hanging out with drunk people or talking to them anymore. Not that it was fun before because I wasn’t really a person who hung out around that, but I’m just saying it changed my life to not drink and to have people in my life who do not drink either.
Learning how to say NO to people, places, + purchases!
Another thing that changed the game for me was learning how to say no to other people, places and purchasing things while not feeling guilty. Now, I am the Queen of NO and actually made a video about “How To Stop Saying YES when you mean to Say NO!” (and if I haven’t made it yet, I will be making it soon which is why I say please subscribe to my YouTube channel and tap that little bell icon so you’re notified when I do publish a new video. You won’t miss one).
But I have to say no to parties and weddings and events and weekend things that people try to get me to go to. A lot of it is really just drinking and social activities anyway. So if you don’t drink you can just make up excuses like I don’t drink or I don’t wanna be around that now. Or you can say I have something else that I need to be doing. There are all kinds of ways that you can say no, which I’ve made a whole list about.
Teach People How To Treat YOU
But learning how to say NO has changed the game and helped me because I used to be a people pleaser. I used to have to say yes to everyone and I was everyone’s second person. I was their second option. You teach people how to treat you and this is the way that you teach them is by saying NO! You say no I can’t do that, or no I can’t come do that. Or sorry, I got something else to do. And they start to learn how to respect you and how to not walk all over you. And so that was something that I really had to learn. It was a hard, hard lesson.
Codependency
If you don’t know what codependency is, you should maybe check that word out. It’s gonna change the game for you. Like it did for me. I was dating this guy and I remember going to this therapist and saying, oh my God, he’s ruining my life. Everything’s going wrong. It’s him, him, him. And he was like, girl, have you looked at yourself lately?
Codependency is when you live your life almost vicariously through other people and you’re worried about pleasing them instead of yourself and worrying about yourself — But, don’t worry they can handle themselves and you can handle You boo!
Learning to be happy & productive ALONE!
The other thing that changed the game for me was learning how to be happy and productive alone. So I actually made a video about my tips and tricks or why I love solo RV living ALONE on my RVersity YouTube channel. And it’s really because I love being alone in my RV. I can get so much done when I’m by myself! Every once in a while when I’m here at the condo I can get things done, but that’s only if my boyfriend goes to the office and he’s not busting through the door doing other things. Sometimes I’m not even at the condo that long to get things done. But learning to be happy and productive alone has helped.
Country vs City Life
I will say coming from the country. IYKYK I grew up in the country and if you don’t know I’m from Alabama, but growing up in the country around all your family, friends, etc… and then coming to the city is really hard to be alone.
I remember going to this little restaurant downstairs (I actually used to have an apartment across the way from where I’m at now) but I went downstairs. I was so scared of having to go downstairs and eat by myself and at the time I was drinking so I was having a drink by myself. So, I called my one friend and I was like, will you come over here and wait with me or hang out with me? Because I think I was going on a date or somewhere after, but I just remember being alone and being so scared.
I was so scared to be alone and do something alone. And I used to always have to have someone around. And in the country, you’re always with people, family, friends, and traveling with other people. At least that’s how I feel because I always had family and friends around — all the people that I grew up with.
Before Quitting My Job
But when I came to the city I didn’t know anybody and I had to start my life over. I was working and I had this job so I had to figure out how to be happy and productive alone. And I actually learned that more than anything. Not only just RVing, but once I quit my job. (So I actually made a video about how I quit my job and the steps that I went through to do that.) But it was after I quit my job, and started my life as an entrepreneur that my life, brain, and everything changed! in the way that I’m even talking to explaining things to you right now, it all changed!
Listening to my body!
Another healthy habit that I’ve implemented to change my life is listening to my body. Especially if it’s that time of the month and Aunt Flow comes to town, you have to make sure that you listen because I’ll notice I get like this huge spike of energy right before my period and then right after it I’ll just crash and burn and I’ll feel so uggghhh, I don’t have anything energy to do anything my body will be aching. So I try not to schedule things that would interfere with that time.
I keep up on my watch and on my phone and my activity tracker of when I have my period every month. And so I know before I go on a vacation, before I schedule a major event before I do anything, I know that I need to go buy tampons or bring my period panties. I need to prepare in advance Or I need to NOT do that event! And so these habits of listening to my body and knowing what’s to come allow me to get things done in advance. Plus, buy products I need beforehand. So I’m not rushing around to find them or trying to get them when I’m in the van or somewhere on vacation, out of town, etc.
Preparing and knowing ahead of time also lets me know when NOT to record YouTube videos because my face is probably gonna be breaking out! And, let me not schedule a meeting on that day or that week because I’m not gonna feel good. Or it’s probably the day that my period starts and I’m gonna be like, oh God, I hate my life. So I try to listen to my body and prepare in advance when I can!
Putting myself first
Another thing that I’ve done is putting myself first taking time for myself. That could be a bath, it could be alone time, just doing something that you love. Walking, going to the gym, hanging out with your dogs, driving in the car, whatever it is. Saying no to other people allows you to put yourself first because you have to do things that are going to recharge your batteries.
Introvert vs Extrovert
I’m an introvert if I’m around a lot of people. I get super overwhelmed to the point where I will physically start crying. If I had to go to event after event after event every day. I would be crying. If I had to go to an office every day I’d be overwhelmed and unproductive. That’s probably why I hated my life back when I had a job. But I didn’t really understand introverted versus extroverted.
Plus, I thought that I was an extrovert and I used to be. But now even though I make YouTube videos, I would like for you to know that I’m NOT an extrovert, I’m an introvert, and being around a lot of people, noise, or chaotic activity and doing a lot of things just drains my battery.
EXAMPLE: If I was to go out this weekend and we had a family event dinner and then we had a friend thing on Saturday and then we stayed up late on Friday or had something going on the whole weekend, I would be feeling super drained and exhausted on Monday. That’s just not my thing! I purposely plan my life to avoid this type of disaster happening!
Simplifying My Beauty Routine
Another thing that changed the game for me was not wearing makeup every day aka all the time! Being a blogger I actually don’t even have makeup on now! I’m always wearing my Zenni’s Glasses they kind of cover things up whether I maybe have a pimple going on or I am recording videos and going in and outside. They double as sunglasses, they transition, glow in the dark, and also block the bad rays on my phone and computer. The reason I talk about these is because they are cool and a great way to look fashionable even without wearing makeup! I have several pairs, others I keep at the RV that are leopard print, and another pair or two of other designs. But, my point is that I live a simple more natural lifestyle now.
Stopped Caring What Others Thought
I stopped caring what others thought. I don’t color my hair. My hair is all-natural. I probably have a couple of grays up in there. But if you know my story, that’s crazy because I’m a cosmetologist. I’ve been a licensed cosmetologist for over 20 years! Which means that I have a license to cut hair, color hair, do makeup, nails, and all the pretty things. (That I don’t actually do!)
My All-Natural Routine
But I have really pretty nails. My nails are really long and I have to keep them cut because it makes me less productive if I don’t cut them. And so I started learning like no perfumes, no lotions. I use all-natural healthy products: coconut oil cleansing, even the makeup that I wear! Also, I’ve gone years without wearing makeup, which has completely cleared my acne skin problems, and got me off all the “supplements” I used to have to pay for, pills, creams, procedures, you name it! NOT wearing makeup has improved my skin, and saved me time plus lots of money!
Although I’ve tried to put a little makeup on here and there because I love my boyfriend, and don’t want him to think my girl, be janky! So every once in a while I put on makeup and I do still have a bag of makeup (that I thought that I had thrown out but I found it). And so every once in a while I will bring that bag out and I’ll put my makeup on and we’ll go out and we’ll do something spiffy! But usually, I don’t wear makeup anywhere.
A Few Of My Thoughts On MakeUp…
I’m kind of against it and cry sometimes when I have my makeup on because I don’t feel as pretty. I feel as if God gave me this beautiful gift because I used to have horrible acne skin and wear makeup with all those chemicals in it! The things I was putting my body, when I mentioned my story, once I got pregnant, I started to learn a whole lot of things about my body!
There was a list of all these “things” that they say, no, you can’t do this, you can’t do that, don’t do this, etc… Don’t eat cheese, don’t wear certain body lotions. Everything you put in your skin, your baby’s gonna feel. And I was like, well dang if your baby’s gonna feel it, what about you? So there are a lot of things that changed in my brain and I just decided I didn’t wanna do anymore!
Eliminating things and stuff.
Another thing was eliminating things and stuff from my life. So if you don’t know, I’m a minimalist and stuff creates stress. So if you haven’t hung out in an RV, maybe you need to! But I can live in the van probably forever, at least for a while, and not feel too bad because we lived in the van for a month. Plus, I’ve lived in RVs for years. I’ve had six of them! I have two of them right now. It is a small space. But what I love about space, even though here at the condo everything’s like white and clean and there’s nothing really going on is all my things and stuff will literally fit in a bag.
I put my stuff in bags and that’s how I travel. I do have some stuff hung in the closet that I might only wear in the city or at a certain time of year, but I try to keep everything in my Vera Bradley bags! I love to take off and I keep everything in these bags! Since I travel around a lot! Plus, I got a really awesome deal on them. I shared all my essential items in another video.
But I talked about all the things that I used to run my life that made my life simple and easy. And I really don’t need that much stuff as a digital nomad when I’m working from home or while I roam because I live my life online. Everything is online! Even my systems, my calendar, my contacts, my pages, my documents, my videos, everything is online so I can access my life from anywhere! Learn How I Stay Organized Online With Systems as a Nomadic Entrepreneur!
Eliminating distractions!
Another thing, that changed the game for me was eliminating distractions in my life. By eliminating the drinking that I mentioned earlier, that helps eliminate a lot of these other things. So quitting drinking helped eliminate distractions because I don’t have drunk people waking up around me and causing problems in my life. Either keeping me up late, not allowing me to get up early or forcing me to get up earlier.
Unsubscribing from emails helps eliminate distractions in my life. Turning off social media notifications eliminates distractions in my life. Also, unimportant phone notifications. If you have all those little phone notifications on your phone listening to all day to a new “text notification, social media notification, and email notifications, OMG, that’s gonna make you go crazy! And that is just something that I cannot do.
A lot of people will tell me: “Oh, I sent you a message” or ask me “Didn’t you get that?” And I say NO I didn’t but that is because I don’t get notifications! So I don’t have notifications turned on on my phone! Which means I have to go over to social media to see that someone sent me something. I have to do that for email and social media.
I’ll even turn my phone off or on Airplane Mode when I’m trying to get something done! I talked about how this helps me stay focused. Either putting my phone on airplane mode, the focus setting, silent or vibrate that way I can get stuff done. I’ve learned to eliminate distractions in my life and not feel bad about telling people like, Hey, we can’t do that.
I’ve just tried to also learn to work around other people’s schedules or work around the environment that I’m in because being a digital nomad and having to change environments or even have people show up or things show up! One day the internet stopped working and I’ve had water pipes burst or things go on that have nothing to do with me! Something goes on and I have to change my day around.
However eliminating distractions in my life allows me to get things done, be pre-prepared, automate, and put all my systems in place so that I don’t have to worry about things that do come up. So automation, scheduling, all of those things I’ve talked about my systems and my programs, but putting those things in place even in my emails and automation of scheduling. I have to do everything online, but I try to automate and schedule as much as I can.
Writing, Blogging & Vlogging
The last thing healthy habit that changed my life is not just automating and scheduling things, but writing, blogging, vlogging, creating, and sharing videos online. I’m a writer even though you might see me show up in YouTube videos, I actually love to write more than anything else.
If you don’t know, I wrote a book and it’s about branding and business called “Brand Like a Boss“. I love writing. I wrote this book, and I created a website to go along with it. In fact, I have several blogs! I have a finance blog, a travel blog, a blog about blogging, a blog about RV life, a dog blog, and a few others. I love writing but most of all I love blogging! Not only is it a way to make money online, but it is also a form of therapy or a release for me. It’s somewhere for me to channel my energy!
YES, I have a bunch of blogs and I’ve written a book, but blogging for me vs vlogging is quicker. I can get a blog post out faster than editing a video. So you can vlog and blog all of that on social media. You don’t have to necessarily have a website. I have a website and I built mine with GoDaddy. Super easy and fast. I bought my domain name there and I set up my website with their GoDaddy Managed WordPress Plans. Plus they handle everything for me. I never really have to worry about my website. I feel like a website developer, even though I’m not one.
But, sharing my story, putting tips and tricks on my journey out there in my life, and being able to help others has given me a release, but also given me a business. I’ve learned how to share myself and my life and my journey teaching others while also making money.
Turning Vlogging & Blogging Into A Business
Turning vlogging into a business, turning writing into a business, turning blogging into a business. And so it’s more than just making videos. There’s a whole lot more to it. I’ve learned how to insert a call-to-action like: Be sure that you like my videos, subscribe to my YouTube channel and tap the little bell icon so you’re notified every time I publish. I’ve learned How to put a little commentary in there: sometimes I’ll also tell people “Hey, go over to my website bloggingbrandi.com! I know how to use blogging, vlogging, and my videos to actually promote myself, my products, my services, and my email list.
For instance: I’ll say “Hey, make sure to get all these tips and tricks to your inbox or all the fun stuff that I talk about more, not just in my YouTube videos. Be sure that you join my fan club and my email list below,
That’s how I’ve learned to build a tribe, with my vibe, and start to attract people to me instead of me, forcing content out of them on social media. So Blogging and Vlogging have been a release for me. I love vlogging, I love blogging, I love writing, and those are the ways that I’ve been able to do it or I’ve found ways to do it.
FREE Blogging Platform
So even if you don’t have your own website, another way that I’ve been able to do it is on Medium.com which makes it super easy. And if you subscribe to their little partner program (I think it’s $5 a month right now. And who knows, by the time you read this it could be more.) But people can pay you to write stories. You write your stories and it’s this pool of money you share with other “partners” but you can paywall your stories or block your stories to where people must pay to go and read them. But, when they do, You get paid.
Either way, it is absolutely free to set up except if you wanna be part of their little partner program, but you can blog on there for free! Start a blog for free and have an about page profile, etc… I have a blog on Medium, I even blogged for 28 days straight one month and did a little blogging challenge with some of my other little blogger friends.
Even better news! I have a FREE BLOGGING COURSE you can take and learn how to blog plus get paid! Get all the deets over at my Born To Blog Club (it’s ALL completely FREE, No Joke!)
